Air Monitoring
In “Subpart Z-Toxic and Hazardous Substances,” 29 CFR 1910.1000 through 1910.1450, OSHA regulates a large number of substances. A CIH’s responsibility is to determine which of these chemicals, if any, could be of concern at your place of employment. You can get assistance from a qualified industrial hygienist to detect potential chemical or physical exposures, assess their seriousness, and help manage or eliminate the danger.

Noise Monitoring
Noise is a by-product of many commercial and industrial processes and exposure to these can lead to hearing loss and other harmful effects on health. The hearing loss brought on by noise can be either temporary or permanent. All employees exposed to noise on an eight-hour, time-weighted average (TWA), in excess of 85 decibels measured on an A-weighted scale, are required to participate in hearing conservation programs under OSHA’s hearing conservation amendment, which became effective in 1983 (29 CFR 1910.95, Occupational Noise Exposure Standard) (85 dBA).
